Raspberries on the Road Trip

-->
Today is the big day we’ve been planning since she came home desperately ill last year. The short summer block at college and Europe were stepping-stones to returning to college for the regular fall session.

It’s a typical bright and sunny summer’s day. Her car is packed to the brim with her personal belongings including a much-loved guitar. We drive 90-minutes to pick raspberries before enjoying a homemade picnic followed by chocolate bundt cake with raspberry swirl ice cream. Then we separate and head in opposite directions. Do I have reservations? Of course I do. However, she’s healthy, happy, and in a good place to take on the challenges of a university environment.

She is still driving but I am home now. How quiet the house is. No music coming from her room. No giggles. It’s a strange feeling, this empty nest. But I would not change it for anything. She has her life back. This is a day to celebrate. What better way, than to attend a Zumba class with girlfriends and share some fresh picked raspberries!
