The Onion Layers of Recovery

-->
Accomplishing the first enormous hurdle of weigh restoration allows Lauren to return to college. What has become apparent is the importance of “state not weight.” Of course weight is still in the picture, but if we peel away that layer, we are left with the predisposing and perpetuating factors of this ghastly illness. They need to be addressed and it has to happen soon. I am talking about anxiety and fear.

This is no surprise. We know that those characteristics, which existed before the illness took hold, will not magically disappear with regular nutrition. They are important because they create a benevolent environment for the development of setbacks to recovery. Sure they can be smacked down by regular meals, adequate sleep, low stress, and moderate exercise. But, what happens when things get tough? Exams loom, relationship disappointments occur, the schedule is packed with sorority meetings, and other extracurriculars. Suddenly, it is more challenging to stay on track. How do we get our young adult daughter to explore and develop new tools?

We talk about mindfulness as an effective technique for reducing anxiety. It is instantly dismissed. Therapy is critical at this stage but I’m told, “there is no time.” Well, there has to be time because this is part of staying well and continuing to have your life back. Health remains #1 - it allows you to teach Zumba, have a leadership position in a sorority, take classes, and be President of a new chapter of a student run mental health organization. If there’s no time for therapy, it’s time to reevaluate priorities. Could this be ED? Of course. Let’s not be fooled into thinking this is all over. We are gradually peeling off layers of the onion and that indicates remarkable progress. But we cannot be complacent. We have to remain vigilant and steadfast in pursuit of full recovery.
