Seesaw

Two steps forward followed by one step back. Weight gain-loss-gain is the norm. Not surprisingly, ED went into a fury over positive change: more-than-expected weight gain. Fear of ever increasing pounds overrides reason - restriction is reestablished. Although probably not recommended in the Maudsley model, we ease up allowing Lauren to reduce her intake slightly. ED stages a comeback and rejoices in weight loss. It takes a few days to get back on track but Lauren learns that she can control the numbers. I know she was hungry at times, but she did not take action. This reminds her of the good times of feeling empty – denying herself that which is necessary to sustain life. Affection for her “loyal” friend is rekindled. We looked across at Alcatraz and discussed whether that would be a good place for ED. However, since it no longer functions as a prison, we could just settle for death by drowning.
