Side Door Entry

Just when we thought all doors were securely locked, an intruder slips in. Silently, he moves about stealthily and systematically. We hear him but don’t react - erroneously perceiving him as annoying, but not dangerous. He is the gluten-free deity – worshipped and admired by many.

For someone with an ED, diets are not an option – not now or ever again. That means no colon cleanses, no detoxes, and no fasts to raise money for noble causes or to enhance spiritual enlightenment. A gluten-free diet is a diet is a diet is a diet (yes, I meant to say that 3 times!)……..and represents a significant setback to recovery.

Why did I allow this? I am sad, mad, and frustrated. All those hoped for “benefits” of being gluten-free remain elusive (of course!). The silent intruder is a terrorist intent on inflicting misery. And he is successful. I despair as the black and white thinking, so typical of EDs, returns. It’s time to get out the paint palette and add some color.

  1. In many maladaptive eating patterns, diets, and eating disorders, there is a central theme that is sadly overlooked: nutrition. The idea of nutrition is often ignored or distorted in individual's with eating disorders and for many pursuing recovery. This is why nutrition therapy is essential in the successful treatment of disordered eating. As you learn more about nutrition and eating disorders, I encourage you to check out this article promoting the importance of nutrition in eating disorder treatment @ http://www.eatingdisorderhope.com/article_nutrition_treatment.html.

  2. I hear you on this! I am so tired of society thinking that better health and longevity lies in giving up this or that -- carbs, or gluten, or fat -- whatever the current trend.

If people could only see that weight is a non-measurement of a person's value.
